Excited to bring to you this new series where we look at the benefits of a particular food more closely. Essentially, all whole, plant-based foods are superfoods and variety is key for a healthy plant-based lifestyle. First up: Hemp seeds.
Hemp seeds are one of the most nutrient-dense foods, providing complete plant-based protein, unsaturated fats and essential minerals. They are also a great source of fiber. The little powerhouses have a nutty taste and are great used in smoothies, oatmeal, muesli or sprinkled on salads and pasta.
Great source of plant-based protein. There are only few plant-based foods that provide a complete source of protein such as quinoa or soy. This means that all ten essential amino-acids are provided. About 25% of the calories from hemp seeds comes from protein, three tablespoons contain as much as 10 grams which is comparable to most animal protein sources.
Rich in unsaturated fats. Unsaturated fats are important for proper hormone function, heart health and beautiful skin and hair. Hemp seeds contain the optimal ratio of 3:1 of omega-6 and omega-3 fats.
Full of minerals. Hemp seeds provide a high amount of essential minerals such as magnesium, potassium, iron and zinc.
High in fiber. Plants are our only source of fiber which is necessary for gut health, stabilize blood sugar levels and satiety.
