Simplicity is my mantra when it comes to skin care during pregnancy. Even though my regular beauty routine consists of all-natural products, just because it’s natural it doesn’t mean it’s suitable to use when you are growing a baby. I did some research and there are certain active ingredients you want to avoid in your organic cosmetic products during pregnancy.
Vitamin A (Retinol)
Too much vitamin A can be toxic for the developing fetus so it’s best to steer clear from products containing retinol. They are often found in products for anti-aging, acne and hyperpigmentation, so check your labels before continuing to use it when you get pregnant.
Willow Bark
Salicylic acid should be avoided during pregnancy as it is a component that’s used in aspirin and can cause various complications. It’s often put in products for exfoliating purposes and the natural skin cary industry replaces salicylic acid with its natural counterpart, willow bark. While willow bark is not as strong as an active ingredient as salicylic acid, it’s still best to avoid during pregnancy.
Unfortunately there is not much information out there on natural skin care during pregnancy and what to look out for so it’s best to consult with your doctor when in doubt about an ingredient. I found it super helpful to talk to my facialist Lara Schurter from Green Lane in Zurich and she helped me customize a skin care routine fit to my needs during pregnancy.
Morning:
- Cleanse with Nourishing Oil Cleanser from Tata Harper. Using an oil cleanser supports the natural microbiome of the skin unlike soap that strips skin off all moisture.
- Tone with Hydrating Floral Essence by Tata Harper
- Antioxidant Dew by Kypris, gives you the most glowing complexion while still being lightweight and easily absorbed. Perfect on its own in the summer, will use it as a base in the colder months and follow up with a facial oil for more moisture.
- Cellular Protection Sunscreen SPF 50 by The Organic Pharmacy. Mineral sunscreen is a must, summer or winter we don’t want any hyperpigmentation happening here!
Evening:
- Remove make-up with Ultimate Make-Up Remover Wipes from RMS Beauty. They are genius, just coconut and nothing else!
- Cleanse with Nourishing Oil Cleanser from Tata Harper
- Tone with Hydrating Floral Essence by Tata Harper
- Apply a face oil for my gua sha routine, my current faves are Beauty Elixir I by Kypris Beauty and Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum
Body:
- Morning & night, I religiously apply Stretch Mark Oil by The Organic Pharmacy on my whole body
