We are in a new era – this is the first non-plantbased recipe on this site! And it’s funny because it’s full circle, one of the first recipes I shared when I started my holistic nutrition practice and this platform was vegetable broth. I have talked about the shift I’m personally going through before, feeling that I needed something more and selectively adding clean organic animal protein to my diet has changed my energy levels and satiety. Bone broth is a great way to boost your collagen intake for glowing skin and gut health.
Ingredients: (preferably organic)
- 1kg beef bones (ask your local butcher for it)
- 1 carrot, peeled
- 1 leek
- 2 stalks celery, halved
- 1 onion, peeled & halved
- 2 cloves garlic
- 1 small piece of ginger, peeled
- a few peppercorns
- a sprig of thyme
- pink Himalayan salt, to taste
Directions:
01. Pre-heat the oven to 200C. Place the beef bones in an oven dish and bake for 25 minutes, until browned.
02. Place the cooked beef bones in a large pot and add all the other ingredients, except the salt. Fill up with water and bring to a boil.
03. Reduce heat to a low simmer, leave lid half open and simmer for 6-8 hours, taking off the fat on the surface from time to time.
04. When the broth is done, drain it through a sieve into a bowl and add salt to taste. Store in the fridge for up to five days or freeze for up to three months. This makes a great warming drink during cold days or base for soups.
